Christmas Snowman – Jan 10, 2017

Hubby is on a one night motorcycle trip so I painted for 5 hours today.  I  have worked on several projects today.  I did finish this mini snowman painting.  I am loving these little paintings.

I am trying  to make the snowmen look fluffier.

Amaryllis Study – Jan 9, 2017

I love painting flowers and I love Amaryllis.  Found this beauty ready to bloom at my local grocery store.  I kept saying I was going to paint it – for days.  Today, I attempted a painting from the beauty itself.  It wasn’t easy and I am not pleased with the result.  I wish I could paint it looser.  The middle of the flower with the stamen and the white center which was further away than the red tips of the petals – well all tough for me to paint.  I am going to sketch it tomorrow to see if I can get a clearer understanding of how the flower itself is constructed – the middle, of course.  Maybe it will be easier in black and white.

Consistency 2016 – Jan 6, 2017

Last year, after much thought and prayer over a word for me during 2016, I chose the word “Consistency”.  My main focus for the year was to be more consistent in exercising, my quiet time with God, my art, and in general staying more focused.  I have been pleasantly surprised at the results.

I managed to:

  • Maintain a Monday commitment to an exercise class at the gym.
  • Adding another day half way through the year.
  • Reading my Bible and adding a devotional about 2-3 times a week

It was sooo cold at my house yesterday, I decided to do some pen and ink on the couch to illustrate this experience.

Snow Prince – Jan 5, 2017

Another in an ornament series for gifts this next year.  It is painted on a wooden star bought at Michael’s.  I have to drill a hole in it.  I am also painting the other side.

Snowman in Watercolor – Jan 3, 2017

The computer and I seem to be cordial to one another today – just as long as I don’t try to upload a large file.  Hoping I didn’t shrink these pics too much.

One of the classes I am taking right now is in watercolor taught by Nathalie Kelley at WTC’s College on the Square in Snyder, Texas.  She is a wonderful teacher and talented artist.  (You can check out her work at https://www.facebook.com/NathalieKelleysArt or http://nathaliekelleyart.com/home.html.)  I have not worked in watercolor in years and only have done so in workshops.  I thought working in a class with other artists and in a medium I am not comfortable with might shake me up a bit.  Mission has been successful.

I chose to do something non threatening and fun – a Snowman!  Hats off to all those watercolor artists out there.  The friskit application alone is tedious and you can tell from my snowflakes, I am definitely not an expert.  However, I have had fun and I have enjoyed working in a studio atmosphere with other artists.  I am going again next week.

Snowgirl – Jan 2, 2017

Busy, Busy Day!

John and I put in another ceiling light in our kitchen.  As per normal this last 12 months, nothing has been easy in our kitchen redo.  It is lovely though and we are thoroughly enjoying it.

It brings with it some interesting problems.  Since we have the new floor in (pics to follow), I am very concerned where the paint is going.  I just let it go where it wanted before and now, well I have to be a little neater.

Today, since time was limited, I played with a miniature canvas which I hope to turn into an ornament for next Christmas.  I am also going to do something with the back of it.  However, I did paint today. Woo Hoo!

My internet is giving me so many problems.  It took 2 days to get the image uploaded and posted.  Whew!  Don’t tell anyone but I have HughesNet.

Happy 2017! Friends

Join me in 2017 January 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge!  It should be interesting because this year I have a mixed bag of goals.  They include but are not limited to:

  • Subject TBA (to be announced) Daily – not worrying about a theme
  • 15 Finished Paintings this month plus about 10 warm-up paintings.
  • Color studies.
  • About 6 drawings.  Most probably in pen and ink.
  • 1 or 2 workshops – online and at the College on the Square in Snyder
  • Teach an Unlocking the Bible Class at the local library

Thank you, Leslie Saeta for organizing them and encouraging artists all over the world to create, and to paint.  These challenges motivate me to paint more.

Worship Art 10/23/16

“Marching With a Different Drummer” off to its new home today.

I began by sanding an unfinished piece from last winter. I intended to photograph it before gessoing but almost forgot. Here it is with gesso already in the center.

The gesso was a mix of grey and black. I applied 2 coats.
Life has been so frantic with family events. Lots of fun but it’s been a challenge to maintain a quiet time everyday. My workout time has suffered also. I mention this because working out brings me closer to God also. Off to church with a canvas and three jars of premixed paint – white (titanium, zinc, pearlesence), blue (manganese, ultramarine, pearlesence and zinc), and silver (silver, gel, zinc, and pearlesence).

I used a credit card to smooth the paint but the tool I used most was a Formica sample left over from our kitchen remodel.

I had fun worshipping and communing with God. So happy it’s in a new home.

Day 27: 30-n-30

painting of beach scene

Beach Sketch 2

You can see the “z” composition is softened in this sketch.  The clouds are soft and meander across the painting.  I haven’t quite finished the water but it is what it is.  On to the next painting.

During this challenge, I have:

  • Primed and painted 6 cabinet doors and 2 drawer fronts – both front and back.  Didn’t think I should post them as a painting a day.
  • Traveled to my Mom’s house for 2 nights to help her out in preparation for my sister’s visit and my niece’s upcoming wedding.
  • Cleared my house of tools, paint, ladders, and other assorted remodeling tools.  Wonder if I should include these in my collage. (I’m laughing at myself)
  • Delivered a painting to a show in Snyder.
  • Delivered two paintings to be shown at Emmanuel Fellowship Church.
  • Traveled to the photographer to get paintings photographed.
  • Arranged for 3 prints to be delivered.

My success is that I have returned to painting on canvas and I can thank Leslie for this avenue.  If you haven’t watched the other artists, you have missed a feast for your eyes and soul.

Day 26: 30-n-30

I have been doing color studies to give me the ability to quickly mix the color I want.  Still working on “Soul Happy” a painting from my turn at worship last month.  It currently looks like this:

At the end of worship, it looked like this:

So you can see I have been working on the sky.  To do this, I worked on a color study of Smalt Hue (Days 9-11)

and Manganese Blue (Days 7-8).

I am ready to rework the greens and was wondering how to use the paint on my palette.  I mixed equal parts of manganese blue and cadmium yellow pale hue for my color and completed the color audition chart. Here it is:

Manganese Blue/Cadmium Yellow Color Chart

Color Chart

I have a good supply of color mixing books but I haven’t learned from them as much as I have from doing my own charts.  I can not recommend this experience enough.  Look at these greens and I know using them will work in the painting because the same blue in the sky is in the green!

Tomorrow, I’ll post my results.

Day 25: 30-n-30

Actually this is from last Sunday’s Worship service.  It was very interesting.  When I talked to God, all I got was shades of yellow and the composition.  I painted the canvas with grey gesso the day before and the yellow really popped on that grey canvas.  It needed something else so I mixed ultra blue and cad red into the grey for the edges.

Days 9, 10, & 11: 30-n-30

Discovering I needed to add a different blue, I wasn’t quite sure which one to add.  I have a tube of Smalt Hue that I seldom used so I did a color chart with it.  Botta Bing!  Notice the gorgeous browns made with Cad Orange and Vermilion Hue.

Days 5 & 6:
Very busy days – Labor Day was a clean house like a madwoman day. We enjoyed dominoes with friends in my unfinished kitchen which meant, of course, that the clutter and dirt from traveling and remodeling had to be cleaned and straightened. This I might add took the entire day.

Tuesday was a travel to San Angelo to see one of our very favorite doctors day. Since we were off to a “big city”, there was a brief stop to Lowe’s to pick up some more tile samples.

I also began work on my new cabinet doors for the lower cabinets. Priming and painting them has begun. I also will prime and paint the trim. Pictures to follow.

Days 7&8: I began pondering my life as an artist and what exactly am I doing and why do I want to do it. Of course, I would love to have more red dots. (I will be most glad when this election is done and we can sort out the cards that fall.) I am deciding to just rekindle my love for creating anything and you may see some other endeavors besides painting again.

Well, it brought me back to the piece I am doing for a client. I didn’t like the way the horizon was looking and since that palette is long gone, I decided to work with one of my favorite colors, Manganese Blue and took the time to do a color study and a small painting. It worked. I am happy with the results and will move on to the next step in the larger painting.

Days 4&5: 30-n-30

Abstract Painting Sun Shower

Sun Shower 28″ x 22″ Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas Suzan Hughes-Kennedy

Sunday, I decided to play with a painting from worship last month which didn’t get finished and I thought I would gesso over and begin again. It looked like this:

Unfinished Painting

Using the paint left over from that session, I began using my regular small palette knife to apply the paint.  It was so much fun but the knife was so small and I used a lot of additional paint.

I have been wanting to take a class from Leslie Saeta for a very long time and this painting has rekindled that desire to make it sooner than later.  I want to learn to use a palette knife better.  The way I stroked the knife made a big difference and I could cut through the layers of wet paint to create depth and additional colors.  Had to be very careful not to mix too much on the canvas though, I could muddy the colors very easily.

Had a little fun last night and today with my pen and ink Prismacolor pens and my Bristol Board Sketchbook.

Another 2-fer or 3-fer couple of days. Today, we got our new over the range microwave installed. Now my kitchen table is free for creative endeavors. Woo Hoo! Here is a pic:

Seascape Sep 2016

Seascape Sep 2016 Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas 18″ x 22″

Hello & Here We Go Again!

I have no set goals this time. Looking to find my painting groove again. I am starting with a painting I began in July and need to finish for a client. I have more work to accomplish on the sky at the horizon. I think the purple is too intense and the water on the left. Plus, it looks like Zorro visited the composition!

Worship Art 7/17/2016

This one grew from the top down. I tried to keep the rule of thirds in mind as I painted. It’s always amazing to me when the Holy Spirit shows up and speaks to others through my work.
